I'm thrilled that Lorenzo and I finished reading 15 books together last week, and I completed some chapters in my book! We're now getting used to our new back-to-school morning and evening routine. I'm implementing the techniques I learned over the summer into our daily schedule.
Reading is a wonderful way to broaden our horizons and explore new places beyond our local city or state. It also allows us to gain an understanding of different parts of the world. It's important for adults to read regularly as well. By doing so, you can discover your interests, stay informed on current events, and learn about various travel destinations. Remember, reading can open up a world of possibilities. So go ahead, read it, see it, and achieve it!
Benefits of Reading
Increase your vocabulary and comprehension skills.
Enhancing your vocabulary and comprehension skills through reading can improve your brain's strength. Moreover, it can also help you develop valuable soft skills employers seek in their workforce. Communication is an essential soft skill for any industry, and reading can contribute to its development. We have previously discussed the significance of soft skills, and reading effectively achieves them.
Reduce stress
As a student balancing study, work, and life commitments, it is crucial to keep stress levels low. Reading has been proven to reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) and activate brain regions associated with pleasure and reward.
Help you prepare to sleep.
Reducing your stress hormone levels can lower your blood pressure and heart rate, leading to a calmer state of mind and better preparedness for sleep. Choosing to read a book under a warm-colored lamp can be more beneficial than using a screen, as the blue light emitted by electronic devices can keep you awake and alert.
FOUND THIS IN MY GOOGLE SEARCH!
My growing appreciation for reading started when one day I heard the quote, “If you want to hide something from a Black person, put it in a book.” I was extremely confused by what the quote meant so I asked what was being implied. The man simply said, “Black folk don’t read.” In my head I was thinking, “well, what is that supposed to mean?,” but now I know. Ever heard of the phrase “ignorance is bliss”? Yes, well in this case it is not, especially for Black people. So, let’s redirect your thinking from “why is it important to read?” to “why is it important for BLACK people to read specifically?.” The emphasis and need for Black people to read is deeper than we think. Let’s do a little recap of our history, shall we?
